Abstract

Hydrogen (H2) has the potential as a novel therapeutic antioxidant without known toxic side effects. Both basic and clinical studies support the anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic biological activities of H2 on injuries caused by oxidative stress. There have been increasing reports which support H2 as a medical gas against oxidative stress-related diseases, however, the theory of anti-oxidant can't explain all phenomena in biology of H2. The concept of that H2 gas is a signaling molecule like nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) has been often put forward. The review summarizes currently available research findings in biology of H2 and advances on its medical applications.
