Scientists studied whether hydrogen gas could protect the brain during sepsis, a life-threatening infection response. Using mice with sepsis-induced brain injury, researchers found that hydrogen gas treatment activated PGC-1α, a protein that triggers mitochondrial biogenesis - the creation of new cellular powerhouses. This process restored energy production in brain cells and reduced oxidative damage. The protective effects suggest hydrogen therapy could prevent neurological complications in sepsis patients.
