TL;DR
Special treated water, known as electrolyzed-reduced water, can protect human cells from damage caused by reactive oxygen molecules.
Key Finding
In laboratory tests, electrolyzed-reduced water protected human cells from oxidative damage to DNA, RNA, and proteins, and significantly enhanced the antioxidant power of vitamin C.
Summary
This laboratory study tested whether electrolyzed-reduced water (water treated with electricity to add hydrogen) could protect cells from damage caused by hydrogen peroxide, a harmful molecule that damages DNA, RNA, and proteins. Researchers added this special water to human immune cells before, during, or after exposing them to hydrogen peroxide. The electrolyzed-reduced water reduced DNA damage, prevented RNA breakdown, and protected proteins from being damaged. It also made vitamin C (ascorbic acid) work about three times better at fighting harmful molecules called free radicals.
Practical Takeaway
While these results are promising, this study was conducted in test tubes with isolated cells, not in living people. Before any health claims can be made about hydrogen water, human studies would be needed to confirm whether these protective effects actually occur in the body and whether they translate to real health benefits.
Abstract (excerpt)
The generation of reactive oxygen species is thought to cause extensive oxidative damage to various biomolecules such as DNA, RNA, and protein. In this study, the preventive, suppressive, and protective effects of in vitro supplementation with electrolyzed-reduced water on H2O2-induced DNA damage…
